‘They can do many things’: rhymes as a pedagogical tool

Abstract Rhymes are popular tools in children’s learning many cultures, but the pedagogical underpinnings of rhyme practice largely unknown. Drawing on insights from a study China, this paper explores meaning and function rhymes early childhood education. Individual interviews were conducted with 10 Chinese teachers series classroom observations teachers’ practices undertaken. An overarching theme data was multifunctionality rhymes, or words ‘they can do things’. Framed by notion sociocultural theory existing studies as tool, is discussed reference to discourses mediation, habitual practice, professional support which bring fore some issues
